Porcelain saucer decorated in blue and white with Rocks, Bamboo and a Peony blossom. Bamboo (zhu) and Peony (fuguihua) lead to the expression ‘May you have Peace and Prosperity’ (fugui ping’an). The Bamboo symbolizes Peace while the Peony is the flower of Wealth and Rank (or Honor). The Rock in the picture represents Longevity. The back of the saucer is covered in a dark brown glaze and still has a sticker stating that it was auctioned by Christie’s. Originally it was part of a large haul of porcelain which was potted in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province and then shipped to Nanking for delivery to the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Indonesia. The Dutch VOC-ship ‘Geldermalsen’ on which the cargo was loaded struck a reef on her return journey to the Netherlands and sank in the South China Sea on January 3, 1752. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985 and sold by Christie's Amsterdam on 28 April - 2 May 1985 as 'The Nanking Cargo’. Consequently the saucer dates from the Qianlong period (1735 – 1796). There is a black firing spot on the front. Diameter 11.7 cm. Height 2.2 cm. This saucer is in Shanghai
