Small celluloid square seal – (3054)
[3054]

Small square seal made from a synthetic material. The makers tried to copy ivory by moulding it with the same parallel lines typical of elephant ivory. We believe that the material used is celluloid which was the first type of plastic and especially popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. The color of this seal was originally ivory-white but turned to a yellowish red caused by red seal ink. The seal has a small square silver inlay on one side which indicates the direction of the seal-imprint. The carving of the seal is very well detailed and mentions the name of the owner ‘Gu Yongfang’ (顧永方). There are no inscriptions on it which is normal for this type of seal which was manufactured in large quantities during the Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 2.9 cm. Width and depth 1.2 cm.
