Dogon terracotta Janus head – (5053) SOLD De Zwaan

A Janus head is a two-faced sculpture with each face poised in opposite directions. This one is said to be from the Dogon culture in Mali, West Africa. The Dogon are an agricultural society believed to be of Egyptian decent going back thousands of years. Many Dogon people still live in small villages at heights of upto 600 meters that are spectacularly clinging to cliff sides which run parallel to the Niger river. There are about 700 Dogon villages, most with fewer than 500 inhabitants. There are approximately 700 Dogon villages, most with fewer than 500 inhabitants. We believe that our head was dug up from the ground as there is some damage on one side of the head which looks likei t has been caused by a spade. According to the dealer who sold it to us it may be 500 to 600 years old but we have not yet been able to verify this. Height 18 cm. Width 12.5 cm. Depth 12 cm. Height including stand 24.5 cm.
