The Ewe are an ethnic group of people located in Togo, Ghana and Benin. They are well-known for their small wooden statues. These ‘Aklama’ statues, represent protective spirits and are kept by the Ewe in their local shrines. Ewe dolls as they are sometimes called, were also used as fertility dolls. The women would keep these dolls under their mattresses to ensure fertility. This cute pair of a man and a woman has a great patina. They date from the beginning of the 20th century or earlier.
