Large ivory girl’s head – (1936)
[1936]

This large carving was bequeathed to us many years ago by an uncle who was a missionary. It is carved in the shape of a girl’s head with an object, most probably a pot, on her head which is carved all around with village scenes. Whereas the carving of the girl’s head is finely done, the pot is rather crudely executed. This kind of carving was quite popular with tourists who visited the Belgian Congo in the first half of the 20th century. We believe that our uncle collected this object during his visits to Congo in the 1930’s but it may also have been earlier. Belgian Congo. Height 33.5 cm. Width 7.5 cm. Depth 8.7 cm.
