Miniature painting on ivory – (5132) Private collection
Miniature painting on a thin slab of ivory. The details are stunning and different from other Indian miniatures because some of the persons are not depicted in the usual profile but the maharaja and two servants look sideways. The scene depicts a maharaja surrounded by bearded men with turbans. They are shielded from the sun by a canopy. On the left are servants holding a fan, a bow, a fly whisk and an unknown object wrapped in cloth. On both sides of the scene are inscriptions in Arabic. The miniature is signed and dated but it is impossible to read the details (Rojes, Aug 1912??) as they are so small. The art of miniature painting was introduced to India by the Mughals, who brought the art-form from Persia. Size of the framed painting: Width 37.8 cm. Height 26.8 cm. Size of the ivory: Width 20.5 cm. Height 11.2 cm. Private collection.
