Impressive Satsuma (see QF 0408) pot and cover which is profusely decorated with two large scenes of samurai warriors of which one depicts a fight with swords drawn. Other scenes depict monkeys grooming one another, ducks and ducklings, a mountain village in the clouds and a scene with people pursuing different activities in front of an altar. The background is formed by flying phoenixes surrounded by gold leaf applications. The cover is graced by a tiger recognizable by faint stripes in the gold leaf. Unknown striped creatures with forked tails form the grips on the sides. The pot is marked on the bottom ‘Yaki’ and dates probably from the latter part of the Meiji period (1868 – 1913).
