Porcelain beer mug with love scène – (1843)
[1842]

Porcelain beer mug, called a ‘Stein’ in England and North America. It has an amourous lithophane scène in the bottom which can be seen when the mug is held against the light as soon as it is emptied. The ‘Stein’ has a pewter lid embellished with floral decoration and it is in perfect condition. The front is also decorated with flowers such as ‘edelweiss', and a ribbon mentions the words ‘in memory’ in German. These words, the scène in the bottom and the fact that it only holds half a liter of beer, make us believe that it was a gift from a lover to his lady. It most probably dates from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It originates from the German-speaking part of Europe. Height including lid 22 cm. Height mug 14.5 cm. Diameter at the base 9.7 cm.
