Sugar spoon for serving granulated sugar. This one has an interesting history. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940 and the Dutch royal family was forced to flee, the Dutch population remained loyal to the Queen. The Germans threatened to take punitive action against anyone who showed warm feelings for the royal family. The sanctions triggered the manufacture of items which looked unsuspicious but were in fact expressions of loyalty to the Queen. This sugar spoon is one of these concoctions. The bowl is made of a silver guilder coin with the face of Queen Wilhelmina and the stem and tip have been removed from another spoon and show a depiction of ‘Paleis Soestdijk’, the residence of the royal family. It was not without risk to have such an item in one’s possession but the affection for the Dutch royals was apparently stronger than the fear of being cought. Length 11.4 cm. Width 2.8 cm.
