A kernel of a Chinese ‘Ganlan’ fruit, a very hard material, was used to make this miniature carving. Depicted are two three-legged toads of which one bites on a coin. The Chinese Immortal Liu Hai became good friends with a three-legged toad who had the fabulous ability to whisk its owner to any destination. The creature happened to have a craving for gold. It occasionally escaped by diving down the nearest well but its passion for the gleam of gold invariably led to its recapture, as soon as Liu Hai dangled a string of cash before its eyes. A Toad with a Coin in its mouth therefore represents Prosperity and Wealth and two toads double that. A Bat represents Blessings & Riches so two Bats double that as well. The Lotus leaves on which the creatures rest, symbolize double Continuous Harmony. The carving dates from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries and is not signed. Length 3.5 cm. Diameter 1.7 cm.
