Chinese folklore features a rich variety of ghosts, monsters and other supernatural creatures. According to traditional beliefs a ghost is the spirit of a deceased. Ghosts are typically malevolent and will cause harm to the living if provoked. This miniature object was hand-carved from the kernel of a Chinese Gânlan fruit which is a very hard material. It depicts a frightening ghostly face with a crown on its long hair and its eyes opened wide. The modern carving is well carved but not signed. Length 3.2 cm. Diameter 1.8 cm.
