Boy with a lotus and an angler with a fish – (1784)
[1784]

Hand-carved kernel of a ‘Ganlan’ fruit depicting an old bearded angler (Longevity) who has just hooked a large Fish (Abundance). A slightly oversized Boy (Wish for many Sons) holds a Lotus in one hand (Continuous Harmony) while he points at the Clouds which symbolize the ‘Granting of all wishes’. Clouds are also considered the union of yin and yang because they are a fusion of the elements water and air. This modern hand-carving is unsigned, which is nothing unusual for the period in which it was created, namely during the latter part of the 20th century. The carving is of an excellent quality. Length 3.6 cm. Diameter 1.6 cm.
