Hand-carved kernel of a ‘Ganlan’ fruit depicting the ‘three-legged’ toad of Liu Hai on one side and a bat and coins on the other. The Immortal Liu Hai became good friends with a three-legged toad who had the fabulous ability to whisk its owner to any destination. The creature happened to have a love for gold. It occasionally escaped by diving down the nearest well. Its passion for the gleam of gold, however, invariably led to its recapture, as soon as Liu Hai dangled a string of cash before its eyes. The Coin in the toad’s mouth represents Prosperity and Wealth. The other side of this well-carved kernel shows an ‘upside down’ Bat which is a pun for ‘Blessings have arrived’. The Bat rests on a multitude of Coins which of course also symbolize Wealth. This carving is unsigned, which is nothing unusual for the period in which it was created, namely the latter half of the 20th century. Length 3.4 cm. Diameter 1.8 cm.
