Miniature object made from the kernel of a Chinese ‘gânlan’ fruit. It dates from about 2010 and it is not signed. We believe that the rough carving was done with the help of a laser followed by hand-finishing. The object is full of symbolism and depicts two Fish (Abundance and a Happy Marriage), Coins (Wealth) and a Lotus leaf (Harmony). A large coin bears the text ‘Lian Nian You Yu (连年有余)’ which means ‘Surplus year after year’. The coin is surrounded by Five (wu) Bats (fu) which is a pun ‘May you have the Five Blessings’ (wufu). The Five Blessings are Old age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. Length 3.7 cm. Diameter 1.8 cm.
