Both half arches which now form a wall decoration, were originally the supports of the roof of a bed. They are rather exceptional because they are made of hardwood instead of the usual much softer kinds of wood used for carving. The main theme is two pairs of phoenixes. A pair of phoenixes symbolizes a Harmonious Marriage. Very finely carved auspicious symbols such as plum blossoms representing the ‘Five Blessings’ (Long life, Wealth, Health, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death), pine branches (Longevity), Cymbidium blossoms expressing the wish ‘May you have plenty of grandchildren’ (shouxian lansun), a Nandina stalk with berries symbolizing the wish for many children, Chrysanthemum flowers (Longevity), Osmanthus blossoms (Distinguished sons) and a number of yet unidentified flowers and shrubs. All four phoenixes have a ‘Lingzhi fungus’ under their wings which symbolizes Immortality. And there are two creatures which are a mix between a Bat and a Butterfly and most probably are meant to bring Blessings and a Happy Marriage. Height 40 cm. Width 31.5 cm. Thickness 2 cm.
