Red and gold lacquered powder horn used for hunting. The spout in the shape of the head of a phoenix serves also as a scoop for gun powder. The front is decorated with a Phoenix (feng) and Peonies (fuguihua) which together form a rebus ‘May there be Wealth, Rank and Good Fortune (fugui jixiang). On the top are a pair of Fu dogs, also called Buddhist lions. The lion (shi) is a pun for ‘Things’ (shi), ‘Tutor’ (shi) and ‘Thoughts’ (si). These three words are all pronounced in the same way. Tutors were teachers for children of high officials. The powder horn which is still in great conditions is dated in Chinese characters for 1930. The name of the maker, Han Ji, is also inscribed.
