Bamboo wrist rest carved with a scene of two scholars reposing in a reed-thatched hut in a mountainous landscape. The carving is very fine and the bamboo has a great patina. Wrist rests were used by scholars to support the arm holding the brush while painting or during calligraphy. The wrist rest created a space between the arm and the paper thereby preventing staining. It dates from the Qing period (1644 - 1912). Length 17.5 cm. Width 4.4 cm. Depth 1.4 cm.
