Rather heavy pendant comes in the shape of an adorable youth riding on a Qilin. A boy riding on a qilin is a pun ‘May the Qilin bring you a son’ (qilin songzi). The qilin is a mythical creature that has the same role as the stork in the West. This particular boy is different from other ‘boy on qilin’ pendants because he holds a gold bar in his right hand which symbolizes Wealth. He wears the crown and long gown of a First Candidate during the Civil Service Examinations. His left hand is sadly missing. Under the belly of the qilin is a depiction of a Swastika (Infinity) and a unknown object, possibly a fruit. The details of this pendant are great and we feel that it should be placed in the middle of the 19th century. The material from which it is made looks like bronze which also explains its weight. After casting and soldering the pendant was first silver-plated and later gilt. Remains of the gold layer can only still be seen on some parts. Width 8.8 cm. Height 8.6 cm. Depth 1.2 cm. Weight 58 grams.
