Pair of miniature silver men’s shoes hanging from a chain. The toe of the shoes is decorated with a Plum flower. The five petals of a Plum blossom symbolize the Five Blessings, Old age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. The shoes (Xiezi) are a pun for ‘Together’ (xie) and in Cantonese dialect, ‘shoes’ are pronounced ‘Hai’ which is a pun for ‘Child’ (Hai). The pendant dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Shoe length 2.7 cm. Height 1.0 cm. Width 0.6 cm.
