Silver pendant depicting a boy who raises one leg which refers to ‘Stepping up’ expressing a wish for Career Advancement. Together, the Boy and the Raised leg symbolize a wish to have Distinguished sons. He has a moveable little ‘willy’ and holds an object which in our view is a Ruyi scepter which symbolizes ‘Everything one wishes for’. In Chinese culture the absence of sons was a disaster. Wearing a small charm in the shape of a baby boy was supposed to ensure the arrival of a son. This pendant dates from the late Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 4.5 cm. Width 2.1 cm. Depth 1.0 cm.
