Silver pendant of exceptional quality depicting a boy who raises one leg which symbolizes ‘Stepping up’ thereby expressing a wish for Career Advancement. Together, the Boy and the Raised leg symbolize a wish to have Distinguished sons. The details of this pendant are very nice. The boy seems to have a rosary between his hands or is it a Bottle gourd (Blessings & Fertility)? On the back of his clothes is an elongated character (changjiao shou) which means ’May you have a very long life (changshou)’ because anything long can be linked to Longevity. Wearing a charm in the shape of a baby boy was supposed to ensure the arrival of a son. This little figure dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947).
