White donkey of Zhang Guo Lao – (3208)

Silver pendant in the shape of a hanging donkey with his hooves tied together. The donkey symbolizes a wish for many descendants. This particular one which was white, belonged to one the Eight Immortals called Zhang Guo Lao. When he did not use the donkey he would fold it up and put it in his pouch. When he needed the donkey, he would sprinkle water on it and it would magically grow to normal proportions so that he could use it to travel large distances. The pendant dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 2.3 cm. Width 3.4 cm. Depth 0.9 cm.
