Engraved bell shaped as a pair of finger citrons also called ‘Buddha’s hand’ because the fruit has the shape of a human hand. The Finger Citron (foshou) is used as an offering and often seen in Chinese homes where it is appreciated because of its powerful fragrant aroma. It is a symbol of Blessings (Fu) and Longevity (shou) and depictions in jade are abundant. This pair of citrons, which is not hallmarked, comes in the shape of a bell because its sound was believed to chase away evil spirits. It dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period. Width 3.9 cm. Height 4.2 cm. Depth 2 cm.
