Miniature headgear with wings – (0807)
[0807]

Very small embossed silver crown graced by curled up wings. We assume that this crown once graced the head of a religious statue. It is decorated with a menacing dragon that seems to be in pursuit of the ‘flaming pearl’ which is mounted on a spring in front of the creature. In China a dragon was revered as a divine mythical being and it was often portrayed chasing after a luminous pearl. In Taoism, the Dragon was seen as a symbol of Good Fortune, Strength and of Fertility as it was believed to bring rain. The mystical pearl, ringed by a fiery blaze, is often viewed as a metaphor for Wisdom and Enlightenment. Other decorations include a Butterfly (Blessings and Joy), Clouds (Granting of all wishes), Osmanthus flowers (Distinguishes sons) and a Peony (Wealth and Honor). The rim is formed by the heads of Ruyi scepters (As you wish). The very detailed crown is hallmarked with the name Heng Jie Xiang (恒洁祥) who was most probably the silversmith who made it. This rare object dates from the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912). Height ca 7 cm. Width 5.5 cm. Depth 9 cm.
