Engraved silver or silver-plated bell shaped as a pair of melons. The melon has many seeds and consequently is a symbol of Fertility. The melons which are not hallmarked, come in the shape of a bell because its sound was believed to chase away evil spirits. There is little doubt that this bell was originally a wedding present. It dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period. Width 4 cm. Height 3.3 cm. Depth 2.1 cm.
