Silver chain and flat lock with the characters Shou and Fu wishing Long life and Prosperity on both sides. The wish is flanked by a pair (shuang) of Bats (fu) which symbolize ‘May you have double blessings’ (shuangfu). Two small bells and a coin dangle from the lock. The fruits are a Pomegranate (Many children) and a Peach (Long life). The coin was struck in Foo Kien (Fujian province) and is marked ‘Guangxu’ who was emperor from 1875 to 1908. The whole ensemble weighs a hefty 44 grams. The lock is marked Shuang Feng Lou (雙鳯楼) who may have been the silversmith or retailer. It dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Total length 28 cm. Lock: Width 5.2 cm. Height 3.8 cm. Depth 0.25 cm. Weight 44.0 grams.
