Gilt silver hat ornament shaped as a smiling man with whiskers and a flowerpot shaped hat. It shows signs of use and most of the gilding has gone. Inside is a red label with the number 3. The cloud trails around this figure refer to an Immortal or a God but he cannot exactly be identified without an attribute in his hands. The number 3 makes it however plausible that he represents one of the Eight Immortals which are often used as hat ornaments. They were usually sewn on the front of children’s hats as amulets but some of the more elaborate ones, sometimes adorned with kingfisher feathers, once graced the headgear and clothing of women belonging to the upper classes. This one dates from the Republic Period (1912 – 1947). Height 3.2 cm. Width 1.4 cm. Depth 1 cm.
