Three-pronged gilt silver hairpin with an embossed top in the shape of a pomegranate and a plum blossom. The numerous seeds of the Pomegranate make it a symbol of Fertility whereas the plum blossom has five petals which represent the Five Blessings, Old Age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. The gilding is rubbed as a result of regular use over a long period. The hairpin is marked Mao Fa (茂發) who may have been the silversmith or retailer. The hairpin dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 9.9 cm. Width 2.8 cm.
