Very small gilt silver hairpin with a finial in the shape of a Butterfly (Blessings & Happiness) inlaid with feathers of the Kingfisher (bird). Decorating jewelry with Kingfisher feathers was so popular in China during the late 19th century and early 20th century that the bird was almost hunted to extinction. Part of the feathers have been lost. The hairpin dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 4.2 cm. Width 2 cm.
