Small silver hairpin in bent form decorated with a Magpie and a Chrysanthemum on one side which is a pun ‘May the entire family be happy’ (jujia huanle). Chrysanthemum (juhua) rhymes with ‘Entire family’ (jujia) and the Magpie represents Happiness. Depicted on the other side is an Osmanthus blossom which symbolizes the birth of ‘Distinguished sons’. The hairpin is marked but we can’t read the characters as they are partly rubbed off. It dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 6.8 cm.
