Silver hairpin with a swinging finial which is mounted on a spring. The finial of this hairpin would swing when the lady who owned it, moved about. It is inlaid with the feathers of a Kingfisher (bird) which have a bright blue color. Depicted are books, one of the Four Scholarly Pursuits and symbol of a scholar. A butterfly (Blessings & Happiness) is placed further down the spring. The hairpin dates from the late Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912). Length 14.5 cm. Width 1.7 cm.
