We are not completely sure but we believe that the depictions on this silver hairpin are nandina and crab apples. Nandina shown in the centre with its many red berries symbolizes ‘Wish’. The crab apple is a pun for ‘Home’ meaning the family house. The hairpin is marked Wang Ju Xing (王聚興) which is presumably the name of the silversmith but might also be the retailer. It dates from the end of the Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 9.3 cm. Width 1.0 cm.
