Hairpin with plum flowers and magpie – (0752)
[0752]

Silver spoon-shaped hairpin which is decorated with a magpie and plum flowers. Magpies (xique) and plum blossoms (mei) result in the pun ‘May your joy reach up to your eyebrows’ (xishang meishao). Plum flowers represent the Five Blessings (see 4093) and magpies symbolize Joy & Happiness. There are three characters Fu Xing Shun (福星顺) on the back which may be a wish rather than a name. The quality is solid but the workmanship is rather primitive and we therefore believe that it dates to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 6.2 cm. Width 1.3 cm.
