Very small gilt silver hairpin with a finial in the shape of a Butterfly (Blessings & Happiness) inlaid with feathers of the Kingfisher (bird). Decorating jewelry with Kingfisher feathers was so popular in China during the late 19th century and early 20th century that the bird was almost hunted to extinction. The butterfly seems to hover over a bamboo leaf. The hairpin dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 6.8 cm. Width 1.5 cm.
