Grooming set with jade fishes and a boy in a basket – (0867)
[0867]

Silver grooming set with a top emblem carved as two fishes forming the pun ‘May you have a happy marriage, many children and lots of good luck’ (shuangyu jiqing). The silver central medallion depicts a cute boy in a basket symbolizing the wish for many sons. But a basket also symbolizes Abundance and Longevity as it was the attribute of the Immortal Lan Caihe. A butterfly (Blessings and Happiness) is hovering above and two peony blossoms (Wealth and Honour) flank the boy. The three ‘tools’ consist of two picks and an ear scoop. The set dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Total length 42 cm.
