Grooming set with a boy in a basket – (8590)

Silver grooming set decorated with two ornaments. The top ornament is shaped as a chime (qing) which symbolizes Celebrations (qing) & Auspicious Happiness (jiqing). The chime is decorated with plum flowers (Five blessings) and a Shou symbol (Longevity). Two fishes (Abundance & a Happy Marriage) and Peaches (Long Life) dangle from the chime. The other ornament shows a boy standing in a basket representing a wish for many sons. The flower basket is the attribute of the Immortal Lan Caihe and therefore serves as a symbol of Longevity. It is decorated with plum flowers (Five blessings, see Quick Find 4899 for explanation). A butterfly (Blessings and Happiness) is hovering above. Pomegranates (Many children) flank the boy on each side. The utensils consist of a sword (Protection against evil), an ear scoop and two picks. The set dates from the late Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912).
