Silver grooming set decorated with a butterfly hovering over a flower basket (Longevity) surrounded by fruits. A butterfly and gourds in the shape of bells symbolize the wish ’May there be ceaseless generations of sons and grandsons’ (guadie mianmian). Also depicted are pomegranates (Many children), a lychee (Good fortune), a persimmon (Things) and two coins (Wealth). The tools are a toothpick, an ear scoop and an implement of which the use is not clear to us. The set is of a good quality but we could not find a hallmark. It dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Total length including chain 34 cm. Central medallion: Width 3.4 cm. Height 2.2 cm. Depth 0.4 cm.
