Silver pipe cleaning set consisting of two jadeite (fei tsui) carvings and two silver dragon fishes. According to Chinese legend (liyutiaolongmen 鲤鱼跳龙门) a carp which is able to leap over the mythical ‘Dragon Gate’ will become half dragon, half fish or 'Yu Long'. Dragon fishes are a lucky charm for scholars who hope to pass the Civil Service Examination. To dream of a Dragon fish is a lucky omen believed to lead to success because the carp ascended to the ‘Dragon Gate’ in the sky to become a Yu Long (Dragon fish). This cleaning set which was worn from the belt has three utensils, a pipe picker, a bowl scraper and a tobacco stamper. It dates from the late Qing period or early Republic Period (1912 – 1947).
