Red lacquered wooden spool decorated with a peony blossom on one side and what is presumably a crab apple blossom on the other. The combination of the two means ‘May the whole family be wealthy and honored’ (mantang fugui). The second character of crab apple (haitang) means ‘hall’ and refers to the family home. The peony (fuguihua) is the flower of ‘Wealth and Honor’. With ‘Honor’ a high official position is meant. The spool has been used extensively but is still in good condition. It dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 14.2 cm. Width 4.8 cm.
