Key holder – Finger citron (5480)

Silk key holder in the shape of a finger citron also called Buddha’s hand because of its ‘fingers’. The Chinese name is Foshou (拂手) The first character of its name resembles the word for ‘Blessings’ (Fu 拂) as well as the word for ‘Riches’ (Fu富). The second character (Shou 手) is a pun for Longevity (Shou夀)。An orange cymbidium (Lanhua 籣花) flower is shown on one side. Cymbidiums symbolize ‘Friendship’ and ‘Grandsons’. The two coins symbolize ‘Wealth’. On the other side of the key holder a purple chrysanthemum is shown. The chrysanthemum is a symbol of ‘Longevity’ because of its health-giving properties. The bat (Fu 蝠) stands for ‘Blessings’. The key holder which is still in good condition dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 14.5 cm. Width 7.5 cm.
