Silk money purse with very fine embroidery in ‘Peking’ stitch. It is decorated with auspicious symbols such as a Brush which is a pun for the adverb ‘Surely’ or ‘Certainly’ (bi). A Lotus flower and leaf (Marriage and Purity), a Boat (to Pass a High Rank to the next generation), a rock (Longevity, Reliability and Hardness) and houses (Protection). The purse has been used but is still in excellent condition. It dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 14.3 cm. Width 8.9 cm.
