Bowl on a flaring base with a hand-hammered, deep bowl featuring a high-relief repoussé design of bamboo canes and leaves. Bamboo decoration is a pun because the Chinese word for bamboo (zhu 竹) and the Chinese word for 'to wish' or 'to congratulate' (zhu 祝) are pronounced the same. And because bamboo is hollow on the inside (kongxu 空虚), it also symbolizes 'modesty' (qianxu 谦虚) since the second character for both has the same pronunciation (xu). This bowl is marked 'Tuck Chang' who was active in Shanghai around 1900. The bowl came from America in 2009. Diameter 15.5 cm. Height 8.8 cm. Weight 323 grams.
