Beaker with plum tree - (6032)
Large beaker decorated with a blossoming plum tree against a 'crackled ice' background. It was made around 1900 by the prolific silversmith 'Wang Hing' in Hong Kong and is marked with his initials 'WH' on the bottom. The quality of the workmanship and the weight of this beaker are impressive. The plum symbolizes courage and hope because it blossoms first and bravely stands against the coldness of winter. The five petals of the plum blossom symbolize the 'Five blessings' (wufu 五福). These five blessings refer to 'Longevity' (寿), 'Wealth' (富), 'Health and Composure' (康宁), 'Virtue' (修好德) and the desire to 'Die of natural causes at an old age' (考 终命). The beaker was added to our collection from England in 2009. Height 14 cm. Diameter at the top 9 cm.
