Hand-carved wooden ornament in the shape of a monkey on a lion. A Monkey symbolizes Longevity and a Lion represents Harmony, Blessing and High Rank. This kind of ornament was mounted on the stem of a short pipe to protect the smoker against burning his fingers. See Quick Find 8183 for an example. Osmanthus flowers wishing for Distinguished Sons form also part of the decoration. The pipe ornament dates from the late Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Length 4.4 cm.
