Boxwood toggle carved in the shape of a boy with a lotus (lian) across his shoulder which is a pun ‘May you continuously give birth to distinguished sons (liansheng guizi)’. The word for Lotus (lian) resembles the word Continuous (lian) and the Boy symbolizes the wish for many sons. The toggle has a good patina and dates from the Qing period (1644- 1912). Height 3.5 cm.
