Buddha’s hand – (5020)
[5020]

Wooden toggle carved in the shape of a fruit called a ‘Finger citron’ also known as Buddha’s hand because it looks somewhat like a human hand. The fruit (foshou) is used as an offering and is often seen in Chinese homes where it is appreciated because of its powerful fragrant aroma. It is a symbol of Blessings (Fu) and Longevity (Shou). Interestingly there are two more auspicious items depicted. One is a Plum flower which has five petals symbolizing the Five Blessings, Old age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. And the other one seems to be a branch of Coral which is a precious object and one of the ‘Eight Treasures’ as well as a symbol of First Rank during the Civil Service Examinations. The toggle dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 5.7 cm.
