Shoushan-stone seal topped by a mythological creature called ‘Dragon Turtle’. The material used is of a very nice creamy color and the carving of the creature and the seal-script are of outstanding quality. A Dragon Turtle (龙龟) is a legendary Chinese creature which combines two of the four celestial animals of Chinese mythology, the Dragon and the Turtle. The body is shaped like a Turtle while the head depicts a Dragon. The Turtle symbolizes longevity whereas the Dragon represents success, courage and determination. The seal is signed by Wu Yun (吴雲) whom we believe to be the famous official, painter, collector and seal-carver who lived from 1811 to 1883. This corresponds with the carving style, seal-script and engraved date which reads 1855. This dates the seal to the Xianfeng period (1851 – 1861). Height 9.2 cm. Width and depth 4.9 cm.
