Boxwood toggle depicting two lions with their paws on a brocade ball. The lion (shi) is a pun for achieving a high rank (shi). The lions are standing on a stylized depiction of clouds which symbolizes the ‘Granting of all wishes’. This toggle, which has clearly been used for a long time as testified by its wear and tear, also serves as a seal and is inscribed with the name ‘Ma Ji’. It dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Height 3.8 cm. Width 4.3 cm. Depth 1.7 cm.
