Chicken - (6365)

Chicken - (6365)
This small white jade chop is topped by one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac, a rooster. Either the owner was born in the year of the rooster or he chose the rooster to symbolize a wish for luck because the Chinese word for rooster 'gongji 公鸡' means 'Lucky' or 'Auspicious'. The carving of the rooster is nicely done. The inscription does not look like a character and is most probably an emblem. The chop dates probably from the late Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) and was acquired in Shanghai in 2011. Height 2.6 cm. Width 2.6 cm. Depth 1.5 cm. Weight 7.6 grams.
