Scroll weight of a lying hound – (4972)

Bronze scroll weight in the shape of a lying hound. The recumbent animal is modeled with its fanged muzzle held up in an alert position, a curly mane down its neck, its forepaws crossed, the spine defined with circular bosses, the bushy tail coiled round the hindquarters. In China a dog symbolizes Future Prosperity. We were told that this scroll weight dates from the Qing period (1644 – 1912) but we are not sure. Identical scroll weight, some of them gilt, have been sold by international auction houses and dealers. Length 7.4 cm. Width 4.0 cm. Height 4.9 cm. Weight 173.9 grams.
